Atsushi Matsushima, the editor-in-chief of CLUTCH Magazine, also holds the position of chairman at CLUTCH CAFE. It was under his creative direction that this vintage-inspired newsprint bag came to life. The bag proudly bears the CLUTCH CAFE address on its front, while “CLUTCH Magazine” graces its side.
Originally designed exclusively for CLUTCH CAFE, these bags have now found their way to the hands of CLUTCH Magazine fans in Japan, affectionately known as ‘CLUTCHMAN’ abroad.
Crafted from 14.5 oz. 100% cotton canvas, the material is meticulously aged to achieve an authentic vintage appearance. The subtle grey hue takes its cue from the cloudy London skies, imparting a unique charm that matures gracefully over time.
The bag’s production is entrusted to CALIFORNIA SPORTSWEAR, a company founded in the early 1930s on Maple Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Their legacy encompasses a diverse range of clothing, featuring leather, wool, and other premium materials. During World War II, they played a pivotal role as a supplier of iconic flight jackets like the A-2 and G-1 to the U.S. military.
Although the company vanished from the scene in the 1980s, it has made a triumphant return in 2023. In its inaugural spring/summer season, the brand generated excitement with a capsule collection crafted from vintage U.S. military fabrics. The following fall/winter season is set to revolve around military-inspired attire, with an array of new offerings in the pipeline.
